The Right to Health Campaign

Myanmar: Between COVID and the Coup d’etat

Since the coup on the1st of February 2021, more than 900 innocent civilians have been killed by the military regime, and thousands have been unlawfully detained with more than 5200 activists still in detention. And then, from early June, a deadly third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the nation with many of the those infected losing their lives at home with little or no medical care. According to the WHO, Myanmar has seen a 1442% increase in COVID-19 cases and a 6355% increase in COVID-19 deaths between the period of 14th of June and 12th of July, and it’s getting worse.

Many of the deaths could have been preventable, had the patients received basic medical support such as oxygen, regular monitoring of vital signs, and simple antibiotics for infection control. Nevertheless, we are seeing an upward trend of a 119% increase in weekly cases with limited hospital beds, shortage of medications, scarcity of oxygen and a backlog of dead bodies in cemeteries. 

While most countries have received support from their authorities throughout the pandemic in various forms, this has not been the recent experience of the people of Myanmar, with the military regime seemingly repurposing the pandemic to try and subdue the people into accepting their rule. The regime’s actions of taking over oxygen refill stations, arresting health care workers, and confiscating medical aid to those who need it paint a clear picture that the military regime have little intention to help the people of Myanmar control the pandemic.

Our Right to Health Campaign aims to

  1. Provide PPE, O2 and medicine for those in urgent need on the ground in Myanmar, please see the donate section for details.
  2. Influence governments and international organisations to pressure Myanmar’s military to allow humanitarian access to all communities in Myanmar, without hinderance.
  3. Influence governments, international organisations and businesses to provide humanitarian aid in the form of finance, medication, protective gear, ventilators, oxygen supply and vaccines etc., to the National Unity Government and Ethnic Health Organisations to ensure their indiscriminate and unhindered distribution.
  4. Mobilise businesses, organisations and individuals who are good and willing to respond to this crises in whatever small or large capacity possible.
  5. Raise awareness of the situation in Myanmar, and amplify the voices of the people internationally.

To these ends, we are stepping up our response. We are calling upon all who are good and able to spare a moment to help when others will not;

  2. Sign our petition to raise the volume of our call for governments to answer Myanmar.
  3. Take part in our email campaign; by using the templates provided and by sending targeted emails to those in a position to do something.

Article 12 (of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights)

1. The States Parties to the present Covenant recognize the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health.

2. The steps to be taken by the States Parties to the present Covenant to achieve the full realization of this right shall include those necessary for:

(a) The provision for the reduction of the stillbirth-rate and of infant mortality and for the healthy development of the child;

(b) The improvement of all aspects of environmental and industrial hygiene;

(c) The prevention, treatment and control of epidemic, endemic, occupational and other diseases;

(d) The creation of conditions which would assure to all medical service and medical attention in the event of sickness.

Following the coup d’etat, it is important to determine what is needed. This brief proposal shows what can be done, and what needs to be done to support the people of Myanmar in these darkened days.
